About this book
What if the person you judge most harshly is the one you most need to understand?
In the English countryside, Elizabeth Bennet wants a marriage built on respect. Her mother wants husbands for all five daughters before their home passes to a male cousin. When Elizabeth meets the wealthy, reserved Mr Darcy at a country dance, their first impressions leave little room for affection.
Around them, Jane Bennet hopes for happiness with the friendly Charles Bingley, while the charming George Wickham offers Elizabeth another reason to distrust Darcy. Money, rank and family expectations press against private feelings. Jane Austen turns these tensions into a sharp comedy about how readily people mistake confidence for clear judgment.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A mother with five daughters to marry
The Bennets live at Longbourn, a comfortable but modest estate in Hertfordshire. Mr Bennet is a dry, bookish man. Mrs Bennet is anxious and talkative, and she has one great aim, which is to see her five daughters married.
She has good reason. Longbourn is entailed, so the daughters cannot inherit it. When Mr Bennet dies, the house will pass to a cousin, and the women will have very little. For these girls, marriage is the only secure road.

What is Pride and Prejudice about?
It follows Elizabeth Bennet, one of five sisters in a family with little money, as she meets the proud Mr Darcy. The book is about love, class and marriage, and how first impressions can mislead us.
What is the difference between pride and prejudice in the book?
Pride is an inflated opinion of oneself, which Darcy shows through his sense of rank. Prejudice is a judgment formed without good evidence, which Elizabeth shows when she trusts her first impressions of people.
Why does the Bennet family need their daughters to marry?
Their estate is entailed, meaning it will pass to a male cousin when Mr Bennet dies. The daughters would then have little money, so a good marriage is their best protection.
