About this book
Step into deep woods where cleverness matters, magical gifts change lives, and kindness faces the test.
In Polish Fairy Tales, A. J. Gliński gathers stories from Poland’s oral tradition. Kings and peasants, clever youths and cruel stepmothers share a Slavic world of forests, villages and castles. Enchanted creatures and magical gifts bring wonder, while bold deeds put character to the test.
These separate tales explore courage, cleverness and the memory of a people. Gliński preserves stories from a Poland without independence, where folk tales carry a country’s voice. Within them, kindness, bravery and patience earn rewards, while pride, greed and cruelty bring trouble. Simple rhythms and repeated patterns invite you to read aloud.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A prince finds a clever bride in a marsh
In The Frog Princess, an old king tells his three sons to marry, and the best wife will win her husband the crown. The princes shoot arrows from a tower and must wed wherever they land. Two arrows reach a senator's daughter and a gentleman's daughter, but the youngest prince's arrow falls into a marsh, where a frog sits on it and offers it back in return for marriage.
The frog keeps her bargain, and the prince hides her at home. When the king demands a carpet and then a cake from each daughter-in-law, she sings to the winds. Seven maidens float down on sunbeams and finish the work in minutes, and her carpet and cake win praise. She then tells her husband that she is a princess, kept in a frog's skin for seven years by her mother, the Queen of Light, to hide her from enemies.
