About this book
In a land where food grows ready-made on trees, even a royal welcome can put your head at risk.
A storm sweeps Dorothy Gale overboard while she travels with Uncle Henry. Sheltering in a chicken coop, she washes ashore in Ev with Billina, a talking hen. In L. Frank Baum's Ozma of Oz, this strange land offers food on trees, threatening Wheelers, and a princess with an alarming interest in Dorothy's head.
Dorothy joins Ozma's mission to rescue the queen of Ev and her children from the Nome King. Deep in his underground kingdom, enchanted prisoners stand among his ornaments, and rescue depends on a dangerous guessing game. With outspoken Billina and loyal clockwork man Tik-Tok among her companions, Dorothy needs clear eyes and practical sense as much as courage.

In short
What happens to a girl when the wind tears a chicken coop off a ship's deck and drops it into a raging sea? Dorothy Gale of Kansas is about to find out.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A storm sends Dorothy adrift with a hen
A hard wind stirs the ocean into towering waves, and the ship carrying Dorothy and Uncle Henry pitches and groans. Uncle Henry has worked his Kansas farm so hard that his health has failed, and this trip is meant to give him rest.
Dorothy wakes in the dark cabin to find him missing. She remembers that Aunt Em told her to take good care of him, so she climbs to the deck in the gale. Before she can find him, the wind rips a chicken coop from its ropes and hurls it into the sea with Dorothy holding the slats. Uncle Henry, we learn, is simply lying in his berth.

What is Ozma of Oz about?
Dorothy Gale is swept off a ship by a storm and lands in the Land of Ev with a talking hen. There she meets Tiktok, a clockwork man, and joins Ozma's quest to rescue the royal family of Ev from the Nome King.
Do you need to read the other Oz books first?
No. Baum recalls earlier events in a few sentences, so the story stands on its own. Readers who know The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and The Marvelous Land of Oz will enjoy meeting old friends again.
Who is Tiktok in Ozma of Oz?
Tiktok is a copper clockwork man made by Smith and Tinker. He thinks, speaks and acts only when wound, and he serves Dorothy after she lets him out of a rock chamber with a golden key.
