About this book

In the shadow of Chaka, forbidden love and vengeance share the world of Zulu warriors.

Nada the Lily by H. Rider Haggard brings adventure and romance into an epic tale of Zulu warriors. Forbidden love stands at its heart, while vengeance gives the story a darker edge. Here, the promise of romance sits beside the threat of conflict.

Chaka casts a shadow over this tale, where love is far from a simple refuge. Haggard draws together the pull of forbidden attachment and the force of vengeance. Read for the tension between these themes, and for an adventure with romance at its centre.

What is Nada the Lily about?

It is the story of Mopo, a Zulu doctor who serves King Chaka and hides a royal child. It follows Umslopogaas, the child he saves, and his love for Mopo's daughter Nada.

Who is Nada the Lily?

Nada is Mopo's daughter, a gentle and strikingly beautiful girl whose people call her the Lily. Her beauty makes many men desire her, and she loves only Umslopogaas, who grows up beside her.

Is Nada the Lily a true story?

Not entirely. The book blends romance with events the preface describes as largely true. Chaka, Dingaan and Panda are real Zulu rulers. Haggard wrote it in the nineteenth century, using Zulu history as the background for his adventure.
