According to this ancient tale, God sends the archangel Michael to prepare Abraham for death. But Michael struggles to speak plainly, and Abraham will not surrender his soul. Their encounter brings warmth and unexpected humor to the fear of dying.

Both ancient Greek recensions, the longer Recension A and shorter Recension B, follow Abraham toward questions of judgment and mercy. A cloud chariot carries him over the inhabited world; Michael also brings him to the court where Abel judges souls. The tale explores early Jewish and Christian ideas of the afterlife through vivid scenes rather than a solemn sermon.

What you'll discover

A reluctant heavenly messenger – Meet Michael, whose gentleness makes the task of announcing death painfully difficult.

The world from above – Travel with Abraham in a cloud chariot as his love of life meets human wrongdoing.

The judgment seat of Abel – Enter a court where human deeds are weighed and mercy becomes an urgent question.

Kindness put to the test – Consider how Abraham's welcome for strangers contrasts with his harsh response to sinners.

Two tellings of one journey – Explore the longer and shorter recensions, with their different ways of telling Abraham's story.

Perfect for readers of biblical stories and later retellings, and anyone curious about early Jewish and Christian ideas of judgment and the afterlife.

Open the first page and meet the guest Abraham welcomes—and the message he cannot bear to hear.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1027/9442/8764/files/loa-forbidden-00099-en_d8349a69-99ce-4905-ba61-5c350cc07b3f.png?v=1792697447
