About this book

Empires rise, cities face doom, and an ancient prophetess speaks with Jewish and Christian voices.

The Sibylline Oracles gathers prophecies in Greek verse, spoken through the Sibyl, a woman seer from Greek and Roman tradition. Anonymous Jewish and Christian writers take up her respected voice to address a pagan world. Their poems move between visions of destruction and hope, warnings of judgment and calls to ethical living.

The collection ranges from creation and the flood to the rise and fall of kingdoms. Book three speaks from the world of Jews in Egypt; books four and five respond to Rome's wars. Christian contributions bring Christ into the Sibyl's prophecies, while later books survey rulers and history through veiled names and numbers.

The Sibyl speaks through many borrowed voices

The Sibylline Oracles are prophetic poems in Greek hexameter, the same meter Homer used for Achilles and Odysseus. They are put in the mouth of the Sibyl, an ancient prophetess said to have lived at Cumae, Erythrae, Delphi and Babylon. Scholars say Jewish and Christian writers composed them over about six centuries, from roughly the second century BCE to the seventh century CE.

What are the Sibylline Oracles about?

They are prophetic poems in Greek verse that survey history from creation and Noah through the great empires, Rome and the last judgment. They mix Greek myth, Jewish scripture and Christian belief in the voice of the Sibyl.

Who was the Sibyl?

The Sibyl was a legendary prophetess of the Greek and Roman world, said to live at places such as Cumae and Erythrae. Ancient writers pictured her as very old and speaking under divine compulsion. The poems adopt her voice.

Are these the Sibylline books that Rome kept?

No. The Roman books, kept on the Capitoline Hill, were damaged in a fire in 83 BCE and later lost. The surviving collection was composed by Jewish and Christian authors who used the Sibyl's famous name.
