Unearthed in Egypt in the early twentieth century, this single, double-sided vellum leaf contains an otherwise completely unknown gospel narrative. It vividly details a dramatic encounter in the Temple of Jerusalem between a Savior figure—widely identified as Jesus—and a high priest named Levi.

When the priest aggressively accuses Jesus and his disciples of wandering the sacred precincts without performing the strict, required rituals of purification, a breathtaking debate ensues. Rather than bowing to the rigid laws of external cleanliness, Jesus delivers a powerful, poetic rebuke. He contrasts the stagnant, physical waters of the ritual baths—waters he claims are defiled by the world—with the pristine, life-giving waters of spiritual redemption.

Far more than a simple historical artifact, Oxyrhynchus 840 is a profound theological statement. It captures the intense friction between established religious institutions and the revolutionary, inner-focused teachings of early spiritual movements. This comprehensive modern translation meticulously unpacks the fragmented text, shedding light on its archaeological context, its historical controversies, and its enduring spiritual message.

What You’ll Discover in This Modern Translation

The Archaeological Marvel of Oxyrhynchus 840: Journey to the ancient Egyptian excavation sites and learn how this extraordinary lost gospel fragment was recovered from the dust.

The Temple Confrontation: Witness the vivid, newly translated dialogue between Jesus and the chief priest regarding the strict laws of the Jerusalem Temple.

Ritual vs. Spiritual Purity: Explore the profound philosophical debate contrasting external, physical washing with the internal cleansing of the soul.

A Window into Early Christianity: Gain a deeper understanding of the diverse, vibrant, and often fiercely debated beliefs that shaped the first centuries of the faith.

Whether you are exploring this work for its immense archaeological value, its historical intrigue, or its deep theological resonance, Oxyrhynchus 840 offers a captivating look at a narrative that almost vanished forever.
