About this book
What happens when the judge must answer for his own judgment?
In The Death of Pilate, Emperor Tiberius is gravely ill, and his doctors cannot help him. He sends Volusianus to Judea in search of a healer. The mission leads to Veronica, who keeps a cloth bearing the face of Jesus. In this medieval legend, the search for a cure opens a path toward judgment.
Pontius Pilate, the governor who judged Jesus, must now face the emperor in Rome. His rank offers no escape from the questions the tale raises about guilt and power. Written by an unknown author and belonging to the Pilate Cycle, this short story stands outside the Bible. It explores how medieval Christians imagined the fate the Gospels leave untold.

A sick emperor sends for a healer
The tale opens at a sickbed. Tiberius Caesar, emperor of the Romans, is suffering from a grave illness. Then word reaches him of a physician in Jerusalem named Jesus, who can cure any sickness with a single word.
Tiberius has not heard what happened in Judaea. He does not know that Pilate and the Jews have put Jesus to death. So he calls a trusted friend named Volusianus and gives a plain order. He tells them to sail swiftly and ask his trusted servant Pilate to dispatch the physician who can make him healthy again.
