About this book
What if the love that haunts you belongs to a world before cities?
Victoria Custer feels out of place in her own time. Bold and restless, she prefers open country to drawing rooms. In The Eternal Savage, Edgar Rice Burroughs gives her a strange bond with a man from the Stone Age—and a longing that reaches far beyond the world she knows.
That man is Nu, an honorable hunter whose strength and speed face constant tests from beasts and rival tribes. Nat-ul, a woman of his own age and tribe, adds tension to his story. Across these distant worlds, Burroughs joins prehistoric danger with a sweeping question: can love survive time itself?

In short

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A hunter goes after the saber-toothed tiger
The book opens in a world a hundred thousand years gone. Nu, son of Nu, moves through the jungle of the Niocene, a young cave man with bronzed skin and black hair cropped with sharpened stones. His father is chief of his tribe. He carries a stone-tipped spear, a hatchet and a knife, and he is hunting Oo, the saber-toothed tiger that kills men and mammoths.
His reason is Nat-ul, daughter of old Tha. The night before, beside the restless sea under a great equatorial moon, she told him she would mate only with the mightiest hunter. Love, she said, must have pride and respect walking beside it. So the fangs of Oo must hang from his loincloth before she will be his. Nu hears her soft voice in his head as he goes.
