About this book
Beyond Spain’s cities lie bird-filled marshes, steep sierras, and wild uplands that most travellers of Chapman and Buck’s time never see.
In Unexplored Spain, Abel Chapman and Walter J. Buck lead you into the wild country of the Iberian Peninsula. Their travel and natural history book draws on many seasons in the field, following birds and large mammals through marshes, mountains, and empty uplands far from the familiar city routes.
The great marshes of the Guadalquivir open into water, reeds, dunes, and scrub. Higher up, steep rock and poor roads shelter wild animals. Chapman, a hunter and naturalist, and Buck, a resident of southern Spain, bring close observation to these places. Their 1910 account offers a window into Spain’s wildlife of the time.

In short
Unexplored Spain is a travel and natural history book about the wild country of the Iberian Peninsula. It was written by Abel Chapman, a hunter and naturalist from northern England, together with Walter J. Buck, who lived in Andalusia.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Spain was wild country to outsiders
The authors begin from a simple claim. For most Europeans of the time, Spain meant a few cities, some famous churches and a long train ride. The mountains, marshes and plains in between were hardly described in English at all. Chapman and Buck set out to fill that gap with what they saw themselves.
The title points to this. Unexplored does not mean that nobody lived there. Shepherds, farmers, fishermen and local hunters knew the land well. It means that the natural life of these places had not been recorded by outside observers, and that its animals were poorly understood beyond the district.
