About this book
A racehorse vanishes, a trainer lies dead, and a dog’s silence gives Sherlock Holmes something to think about.
In Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, Dr John Watson follows his friend through cases where ordinary details carry hidden weight. Silver Blaze begins with a missing horse and a death on Dartmoor. The Stockbroker’s Clerk turns a tempting job offer into a reason for suspicion.
Other puzzles reach into family rites, troubled homes, and a government office where a stolen treaty threatens Percy Phelps with ruin. The Gloria Scott opens a window onto Holmes’s first case, while Mycroft Holmes reveals another remarkable mind in the family. In The Final Problem, a dangerous rival draws near.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A silent dog solves Silver Blaze
The collection opens with Silver Blaze. A famous racehorse has vanished from a Dartmoor stable, and his trainer, John Straker, lies dead on the moor with a head wound. The horse's owner is Colonel Ross, who is sure of his facts and impatient with outsiders. Inspector Gregory has arrested a suspect, a young man who was in the area that night. Holmes travels there with Watson, only days before the race the horse was due to run.
Holmes does not rush about the moor in a frenzy. He walks the ground, asks small questions, and looks at things others walk past. He asks about the sheep in the stable and how they were doing. He asks what the stable dog did on the night of the crime. The answers seem trivial to Gregory.
