About this book
What if the wanted criminal understands the mystery before the police do?
Arsène Lupin lives on the wrong side of the law, but he makes detection part of his mischief. In Maurice Leblanc’s The Confessions of Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief uses charm, disguise, and sharp observation to outwit opponents. His nerve matters, but so does his skill at shaping what other people believe.
These short crime stories move from case to case, rather than tell a steady account of Lupin’s life. An object, a gesture, or a misleading account can turn an investigation in the wrong direction. The police pursue him, giving this proud, inventive criminal someone to measure himself against—and making each contest a test of perception.

In short
A thief rests on a sofa in a writer's study and dictates a string of numbers that came from flashes of sunlight on a house across the street. That is how the first confession of Arsène Lupin begins.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A flash of light starts a murder hunt
The writer begs Lupin to share the secrets behind his adventures. Lupin dictates numbers taken from sunbeams flashing on the house opposite. Turned into letters, they form an English warning full of spelling mistakes that breaks off mid-sentence.
The signals come from a flat where Lavernoux, secretary to the racehorse owner Baron Repstein, is kept ill in bed by a doctor with a grey beard. Lupin picks the lock and finds him dead. The trail leads to the Baron's house, where his wife is said to have vanished with three million francs and a princess's jewels.
