About this book
What happens when women challenge the Bible verses used to keep them beneath men?
In The Woman's Bible, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and a committee of women examine passages that speak of women—or are used against them. Their short comments question readings that support women's inequality. For Stanton, this is no distant debate: ministers and legislators use scripture to resist demands for women's rights, making religious interpretation a practical barrier to change.
The commentary moves from the creation stories in Genesis to the letters of Paul and those attributed to him. Eve, Sarah, Hagar and Ruth receive close attention, alongside laws and teachings about women's place. Sharp, funny and scholarly by turns, these readings ask who gets to interpret a sacred text, and whose interests those interpretations serve.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Stanton Targets the Bible as a Political Tool
Stanton begins from a practical problem. For decades she had watched ministers and legislators answer calls for women's rights with a Bible verse. Women, they said, were meant by God to obey. Stanton concluded that arguing law and justice was not enough while this belief held people's minds.
In her introduction she says that no other book has been used so steadily to keep women in a lower place. She points to the churches, the courts and the family, where scripture was quoted to settle the matter. For her the issue was not whether the Bible was true. The issue was that it was being used as a final authority against half the human race.
