About this book
In a frozen empire of watchful police, even the hope of freedom must learn to hide.
Mór Jókai’s The Green Book; Or, Freedom Under the Snow takes you into imperial Russia, where strict rank shapes life and talk of liberty stays quiet. At its heart stands a secret society whose green rule book holds the hopes of people who want reform.
Around that hidden cause move idealists, spies and powerful men. Love and loyalty become part of the political struggle, and public causes reach into the home. Jókai brings the sweep of adventure romance to a world of conspiracy and divided hearts, where a longing for freedom meets the weight of imperial power.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A shot at a stag starts a feud
The story opens in the Bjelostok forest. A rider follows a bloodied prisoner and gathers his frozen blood from the snow. Later, in St Petersburg, a royal hunt drives a stag toward patients returning from church.
A shot rings out at the gate of a park. A woman with reddish gold hair steps forward with a pistol in her hand. She is Zeneida Ilmarine, the Czar's favorite singer. Princess Maria Alexievna Ghedimin, who rides with the hunt, cries that the stag belongs to the emperor. Zeneida answers that the sick come first, then fires her last shot into the air.
