About this book
When the courts cannot touch a wrongdoer, who has the right to decide the punishment?
In Edgar Wallace’s The Three Just Men, three determined men act where the law falls short. Manfred leads with calm resolve. Leon Gonsalez understands how criminals think. Poiccart brings steady, practical skill. Together, they move quietly through a world of schemers, hidden motives and dangerous secrets, pursuing wrongdoers beyond the courts’ reach.
Wallace keeps the story moving with short scenes, a fast plot and sharp portraits of crooks and policemen. But beneath the suspense lies a question that refuses to stay quiet: if good men take punishment into their own hands, what keeps them good? The trio’s strict sense of justice faces the troubling gap between law and right.

An odd advertisement draws a country girl to London
Mirabelle Leicester lives at Heavytree Farm with her aunt Alma Goddard, and money is short. When she spots an advertisement for a laboratory secretary at a fine salary, she applies at once. The wording asks for a young woman whose family has standing in science, and her late father was an astronomer.
She is interviewed at the City Road office of Oberzohn and Smitts, in a bare room with gold walls and a purple carpet. Dr. Eruc Oberzohn, a tall Swede with an enormous forehead, hires her on the spot and pays ten pounds in advance. He sends her to count jars in a laboratory that smells of fresh paint. The telegram she writes to her aunt goes straight into his fire.
