About this book
What happens when the kindness learned at home meets the rules, friendships, and mischief of school?
In Margaret Sidney’s Five Little Peppers at School, the Pepper children step into a wider world of lessons, classmates, and teachers. Thoughtful Polly takes responsibility seriously, steady Ben wants to do right by his family, and lively Joel often rushes into trouble. Their challenge is to keep their kindness while finding their place among others.
At home, Mamsie holds the family together with love and good sense. At school, those lessons take shape in small choices: sharing a task, standing beside someone who is teased, or admitting a mistake. Alongside gentle Davie and loving Phronsie, the older children face questions about duty, ambition, and how to treat people when no one is watching.

In short
Joel Pepper wants his new tennis racket back, and a boy named Jenkins has hidden it in a housemaid's closet. Before the week is out, Joel is in a bloody fight, then in a midnight brawl in a pine grove, then halfway up a lightning rod with the school matron staring down at him.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A stolen racket starts the trouble
The story opens at Dr. Marks's boys' school, where Joel Pepper is called to class just as a boy named Jenkins slips into his room. Jenkins wants revenge for the beating Joel gave him the term before. He hunts for the new racket that Grandpapa King has sent, because a big match is set for two o'clock that afternoon.
Tom Beresford, a tall boy who finds the whole business funny, spots the racket under a bed. Then another boy comes charging down the hall, and Jenkins shoves it into a housemaid's closet under some cleaning cloths. Joel comes back, finds the racket gone, and rolls up his sleeves. The fight is hardly begun when the matron, Mrs. Fox, is heard on the stairs. Everyone scatters, and Joel is left with a bloody nose and a torn sleeve.

What is Five Little Peppers at School about?
It follows the Pepper children during their school days. Joel and David attend Dr. Marks's boys' school, while Polly goes to Miss Salisbury's school. They face pranks, a stray dog, an accident and a charity entertainment.
Do I need to read the earlier Five Little Peppers books first?
No. The author explains that this book fills in the school days left out earlier, and it introduces each character clearly. Readers who know the family from the earlier stories will enjoy the extra familiar touches.
Who is Mamsie and why does she matter so much?
Mamsie is the Peppers' mother, now Mrs. Fisher. Her values of honesty, self-control and kindness guide Joel, David and Polly in every chapter, even when she is miles away from them.
