About this book
Midnight strikes, a wealthy widow presses her suit, and a jealous man watches from behind the curtains.
In Annie G. Savigny’s A Heart-Song of To-day, Mrs. Tompkins wants Captain Trevalyon’s love, and she offers her wealth along with her heart. Over champagne, she tells him about Colonel Haughton’s proposal. Trevalyon urges her toward his friend, while his own thoughts keep returning to Vaura, whom he has missed seeing.
Then George Delrose steps out from concealment, turning an intimate conversation into a contest of wills. Mrs. Tompkins orders him away; he refuses to leave her with a rival. Beneath the polished manners, desire becomes a struggle for control. Money, jealousy, and wounded pride make every courteous gesture feel uncertain.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A widow plots at midnight
The novel opens at midnight in a boudoir in Eaton Square, London. Mrs. Kate Tompkins, an American widow whose husband made his millions from a laundry business, has kept Captain Lionel Trevalyon after a champagne supper. She tells him that Colonel Eric Haughton proposed to her that morning. She hopes Trevalyon will beg her not to accept. Instead he laughs, kisses her hand, and gives his blessing.
Behind a curtain, a furious man has been listening. He is Major George Delrose, a black-bearded soldier who has been her lover for seven or eight years. He strides out, trades insults with Trevalyon, and threatens to tell London about her low birth. Trevalyon only wants to leave, because he has again missed seeing Vaura Vernon, the Colonel's niece. He bows politely and goes.
