About this book
What if your best hope on Mars is a creature whose thoughts you cannot follow?
Dick Jarvis, a member of the Ares crew on the first human expedition to Mars, finds himself alone on a desert planet. Then he meets Tweel: tall, bird-like, and caught in trouble of his own. Their journey brings strange life, uncertain encounters, and the challenge of finding common ground.
In A Martian Odyssey, Stanley G. Weinbaum makes alien life more than a monster to fear. Tweel has his own habits, intelligence, and ways of making sense of the world. As Jarvis tells his tale in a relaxed, joking voice, their unlikely friendship asks how much understanding can grow when words fall short.

In short
Picture a man alone on Mars, his nose frostbitten, a water tank on his back, hundreds of miles from his ship. At dusk he hears a wild racket of whistles and caws.

A crashed rocket leaves Jarvis walking home
The story begins after the danger is over. Dick Jarvis, the chemist of the Ares, stretches out in the cramped ship and tells his three crewmates what happened. Putz is the engineer, Leroy the French biologist, and Harrison the astronomer and captain. Jarvis flew off in an auxiliary rocket to scout, and then nobody heard from him for ten days.
He flew south over gray plains and orange deserts. Then, over Thyle, the atomic blast of his motor weakened and the rocket dropped. It landed hard and smashed his nose against the window. He can wait to be picked up, or he can walk eight hundred miles with about twenty days to spare.

What is A Martian Odyssey about?
It is about Dick Jarvis, a chemist on the first Mars expedition, whose rocket crashes far from base. He walks home across the planet, makes friends with a Martian called Tweel and meets several very strange forms of life.
Who is Tweel in A Martian Odyssey?
Tweel is a tall Martian with a flexible beak, a pouch and a glass pistol. He cannot speak much English, but he saves Jarvis, travels with him and shows an intelligence that Jarvis comes to admire.
Why is A Martian Odyssey important in science fiction?
Weinbaum gives Mars aliens that are truly different, with other chemistry, other senses and other minds. Before the story, many aliens were simply odd humans, so it opened a path for later writers.
