About this book
What happens when a headstrong American girl meets the rules and rivalries of an English boarding school?
In A Harum-Scarum Schoolgirl, Angela Brazil follows a spirited girl into a world of shared dormitories, classrooms and timetables. She brings a frank, unruly nature to a place where everyone lives by the same rules. Her misadventures turn school life into a lively test of how to get along with others.
Friendship and rivalry give this small world its drama. A new bond can brighten a lonely term; a quarrel can make familiar rooms feel less welcoming. Brazil keeps the story light with cheerful talk, brisk action and gentle humour. Alongside the fun comes a warm picture of girls learning, playing and growing up together.

In short
Can one girl change a whole school in a single year? Diana Hewlitt, a fourteen-year-old American, is left at Pendlemere Abbey in the north of England when her parents must rush to Paris.

A Pixie Girl Arrives in Disguise
Diana Hewlitt reaches Pendlemere Abbey on the first day of term. That is also the day the girls learn that their headmistress, Mrs. Gifford, has sailed for Burma to join her husband. Miss Todd, the second mistress, now runs the school, and the girls grumble about it from a wheelbarrow in the garden.
Then a stranger shambles toward them. She stoops, stares blankly, has a receding chin and a creaky voice, and says her name is Miranda Jane Judkins of Massachusetts. When the girls are properly horrified, she straightens up and her face turns bright and amused. She is Diana, a born actress, and her parents have left her at the nearest good school because they cannot take her to Paris.
