A debtor slips away to the mainland
Balboa is born in Jerez de los Caballeros in the later fifteenth century. He came from a family of the lesser nobility, which meant a good name and little money. Like many young men of his kind, he looked west for a chance. He sailed to the Americas and settled on the island of Hispaniola, where Spain already held a foothold.
He tried farming there and failed. His debts grew until creditors threatened him. Escape from the island was not easy, because ships were watched and debtors were not allowed to leave. The tale told of him is that he had himself hidden in a cask and carried aboard a ship as if it were part of the stores.
That ship belonged to an expedition led by a lawyer named Martín Fernández de Enciso, who was bound for the coast of the mainland to bring help to a struggling settlement. Balboa was found once the ship was at sea. Enciso was angry and spoke of leaving him on a lonely island, but in the end the stowaway stayed. He knew parts of the coast from an earlier voyage, and that knowledge made him useful.
Here is the first lesson of his story. A man with no money and no standing can still gain a place if he knows something others lack. Balboa had that knowledge, and he was bold enough to use it when the expedition ran into trouble on the coast.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
