A false saint is unmasked in court
The story opens in Ostromdscha, where the traveler Kara Ben Nemsi and his friend Hadschi Halef Omar are summoned before a crooked court. In this region of Skipetar tribes, the weaker side must yield to the stronger. The two strangers decide to apply that rule themselves.
The man behind the trial is old Mubarek, a holy man who works miracles in the eyes of the crowd. Kara Ben Nemsi seats himself in the judge's chair and tears open the old man's kaftan. Hidden in it are folding crutches, a wig, flour for paling his face and a bracelet of Venetian gold coins. The holy man and the cripple Sakat are one and the same thief.
The crowd that wanted the strangers punished now cheers them. The lesson is that fear lives on false authority, and a calm man with proof can break it. The vain Kodscha Bascha, the district head, is humbled too, and a long pursuit begins.
