Who Toad is
Toad lives at Toad Hall, a grand house with gardens and a boathouse. He is cheerful and boastful, with plenty of money and an eager audience in his friends. Although he is endlessly pleased with himself, he also treats his friends kindly.
What Toad wants
Toad wants whatever new pursuit has taken hold of his imagination. When Rat and Mole visit, he enthusiastically persuades them to travel in his horse-drawn caravan. After a motor car wrecks the caravan, he forgets the journey and longs to drive instead.
Toad and the others in the story
Rat and Mole recognise the danger in Toad's growing passion for cars. Badger takes a firmer approach, joining them to demand that Toad give up driving. Their efforts show that friendship sometimes means opposing a friend's wishes rather than agreeing with every plan.
