A bold trapper defies the land of demons

Jean Marcel, a young Frenchman who hunts furs for the Hudson's Bay Company near Whale River, wants one thing above all, a team of sled dogs. A sickness has killed most of the dogs at the post, and the Eskimo hunters who own the best ones, called Huskies, will ask high prices. So Marcel decides to meet them on the coast before they reach the post.

To do it, he must cross the divide north of the Ghost River and find the Big Salmon, through the country the Crees call the land of the Windigo, a man-eating spirit. His partners Antoine Beaulieu and Joe Piquet beg him to stay and say goodbye as if he were already dead. He lives on smoked meat, a net and a rifle, and loses his way among the lakes.

In June he runs the last rapids and sees an Eskimo camp on the beach. The lesson is plain. Fear of the unknown is often the real barrier, and a man who goes to see for himself can cross it. But Marcel has forgotten the old feud between Crees and Eskimos, and it may cost him his life.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
