Che cos’è questo libro

Meet an ordinary boy who cannot sit still. Sinclair Lewis published The Trail of the Hawk in 1915. It follows Carl Ericson, the son of a Norwegian carpenter in the small Minnesota town of Joralemon, from a muddy back yard in 1893 to the years of the First World War. Carl works as a lineman, a hobo, an actor and a mine hand. Then he learns to fly and becomes the champion everyone calls Hawk. Lewis writes with humor and a sharp eye for snobbery, and one question runs through every chapter: what is a good life for someone who cannot sit still?

A backyard general runs away

The story opens in October 1893. Carl is eight, and he is punished with a woodpile. He turns nails into an army led by General Door-Hinge. The narrator calls him the true typical American of his time, the son of a carpenter who crossed the sea in steerage.

Gertie is ten, well dressed and sure of herself. Carl proposes that they run away to San Francisco, and she follows him along the railroad track.

Night falls, and a drunken farmer chases them with a pitchfork. They find shelter with Bone Stillman, a lonely farmer who reads and talks to his dog. He feeds them, tells Carl that no outside force can truly harm him, and drives them home. Years later Carl sees that night as his first push toward the great world.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
