Che cos’è questo libro

What becomes of a boy who kills geese, flays a mare and slays a man before he is fifteen? The Story of Grettir the Strong is an Icelandic saga about a huge, quarrelsome man who fights berserks, a bear and a ghost. It gives you a life of fame, bad luck and exile, told in plain, sharp scenes. The first idea goes back before Grettir's birth, to the families that sail to Iceland.

Exiles from King Harald Make a New Home

The saga begins with Onund Treefoot, a Viking who loses a leg in the great sea battle at Hafrsfjord, where King Harald wins Norway. Many who fought against the king lose their lands and run, and Iceland becomes their refuge. Grettir's story grows from these exiles.

Onund gets a wooden leg and a nickname, but he stays dangerous. He defeats the raiders Vigbiod and Vestmar by waiting in a narrow channel while his men drop stones from the cliffs above. Later he settles at Coldback in the Westfirths. After Onund dies, his sons dispute land with Flosi. Their quarrel leads to a fight over a stranded whale, and the lawman later rules that the land be shared equally.

The lesson is that Grettir inherits grudges, pride and a taste for law as much as land. Generations pass, and Asmund the Greyhaired settles at Biarg in Midfirth.

Questions about La saga di Grettir il Forte

What is The Story of Grettir the Strong about?

It follows Grettir Asmundson, an Icelandic man of huge strength and bad luck. He fights berserks, a bear and a ghost, is outlawed, and spends years seeking shelter in the wilds.

Who is Glam in Grettir's saga?

Glam is a godless Swedish shepherd killed on Yule Eve who then walks as a ghost and ruins a valley. Grettir fights him, and Glam's curse about the dark and bad luck follows Grettir afterward.

Is Grettir's saga a true story?

The saga places Grettir among named families, rulers and places in Iceland and Norway. It also tells of ghosts, giants and sorcery, so it is not simply a factual account of a man's life.

Why was Grettir outlawed?

His first outlawry follows the killing of a farmhand named Skeggi. His later full outlawry follows the burning in which Thorir of Garth's sons die. Thorir presses the charge and resists efforts to have Grettir freed.

Is Grettir the Strong easy to read?

The scenes are vivid, direct and driven by action, with fights, hauntings and clever verses. Short chapters let you follow the family names and the story without trouble.
