A stolen child is raised by wanderers
The poem opens with a wandering people known as heathens. They roam from land to land, yet they keep firm laws of their own. Their leader is Maiombe, a cunning woman.
One day in Madrid she snatches a girl of about two, left alone in the street while her maid chats with a neighbour. The child wears fine clothes and jewels, and that is what draws Maiombe at first. The mother and father search everywhere, but nobody learns where the girl has gone.
Maiombe decides to keep her and raise her as her own. This sets up the whole tale, because the child will grow up between two worlds. One is the roaming band around her, and the other is the noble home she comes from.
That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Questions about La ragazza zingara spagnola
What is The Spanish Gypsy Girl about?
It is a Dutch verse tale about Constance, a girl stolen in Madrid and raised by wanderers, and Don Ian, a knight who agrees to live with them for two years to win her. It follows their love, a false accusation and a debate.
Where does Jacob Cats's Spaens Heydinnetie come from?
It is one of the marriage tales in Cats's Trouringh of 1637. Most tales are followed by a conversation between two friends, which here covers pulse reading, palmistry and marriage across faiths.
Who are Constance and Maiombe?
Constance, also called Pretiose, is the gifted young singer at the center of the tale. Maiombe is the leader of the wandering band who raises her and guides the band's dealings.
Why does the poem end with a conversation?
Cats pairs most tales with a talk between an older and a younger man. Here they ask whether a pulse shows love, whether fortune tellers can be trusted, and whether a Christian should marry outside the faith.
