Riassunto di Agente segreto: Racconto semplice
A chi è rivolto
For readers who love ironic crime fiction, London history, and characters seen with a cold eye. It is also a good first Conrad, blending espionage, family secrets, and a darkly funny city of fog and gaslight.
Che cos’è questo libro
The Secret Agent is a novel by Joseph Conrad, published in 1907. It is set in London in the 1880s and tells of a shopkeeper in Soho who lives a double life as a spy. Conrad, a Polish-born writer who became a master of English prose, wrote it after the world had already seen a wave of bombings by anarchists. He gave it the subtitle A Simple Tale, and the word simple is a joke, because the story is full of irony.
The book is a spy story, a crime story and a family story in one. It follows Adolf Verloc, whose small shop hides his real work for a foreign embassy. It follows his wife Winnie, who has made a bargain to protect her fragile brother Stevie. It follows the police, who hunt for the people behind a bomb in Greenwich Park. Nobody in it is quite what they claim to be.
What do you get from it? You get a dark and funny picture of a city of fog, gaslight and gossip, where revolutionaries talk more than they act and officials care more about reputation than truth. You also get a quiet study of how small decisions by bored, frightened people lead to ruin. Let us begin with the shop in Brett Street, where the story starts.

Punto chiave 1 di 9
A quiet shop hides a double life
The story opens in Brett Street, a narrow street in Soho, in a shop that sells doubtful goods. The window shows photographs of dancing girls, odd bottles, and cheap papers. Some of the customers are young men, and some are older men in shabby coats. The shop is kept by Adolf Verloc, a heavy man who looks sleepy and who prefers to lie in bed until late in the day.
Verloc is more than a shopkeeper. He is a secret agent in the pay of a foreign embassy, and his code name in its files is Delta. He is also known to the London police, because he passes them information from time to time. Conrad makes clear early that Verloc takes money from two sides and is loyal to neither.
He lives behind the shop with his wife Winnie, her elderly mother, and her younger brother Stevie. Winnie is calm and watchful and keeps the household running. Her mother, a widow who once ran a boarding house, depends on her daughter and her son in law. The home is quiet, and its quiet depends on a lie.
Stevie is the one person in the house who cannot hide what he feels. He is a gentle young man who is easily upset, and he cannot bear to hear of cruelty. He spends his days doing small jobs and drawing patterns of circles on paper. Winnie watches over him like a mother, and this care will shape everything that follows.
Conrad lets you see how comfortable Verloc has grown, and how little he expects to be disturbed. A man who has lived on small lies for years tends to believe that nothing will ever ask more of him. That belief is about to be tested.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Agente segreto: Racconto semplice
What is The Secret Agent about?
It tells of Adolf Verloc, a Soho shopkeeper who spies for a foreign embassy and informs for the police. When the embassy orders him to arrange a bomb attack at Greenwich, his family and his double life come under threat.
Is The Secret Agent based on a true story?
It is fiction, but Conrad drew on a real event, the 1894 bombing near the Greenwich Observatory. He also used the atmosphere of anarchist circles in London. The characters and the plot are his own invention.
Why is it called A Simple Tale?
The subtitle is ironic. The story looks like a plain crime tale, but it is layered with deceit, satire and tragedy. Conrad uses the word simple to hint that the truth behind events is never simple.
Is The Secret Agent hard to read?
No. The story starts in one small place, a shop on Brett Street, and each part follows a few clear people. A calm narrator explains who they are and what they want, so you always know where you stand.
Who is the Professor in The Secret Agent?
He is a bomb maker who lives on the edge of the revolutionary circle. He carries explosive in his coat as protection and despises the others. Conrad uses him as the book's one true fanatic.
