A chi è rivolto

For readers who love sea adventures with ideas in them, and anyone curious about the clash between brute strength and the life of the mind.

Che cos’è questo libro

The Sea-Wolf is a novel by the American writer Jack London, published in 1904. It was written when London was a young man who had already worked on a sealing schooner himself, and who had read widely in the science and philosophy of his day. The book puts a refined, bookish man on a ship ruled by a captain who believes that life has no purpose except to eat or be eaten.

The story is told by Humphrey Van Weyden, a literary critic from San Francisco who has never done a day of hard physical work. One foggy morning a ferry sinks under him, and he is pulled from the water by a sealing schooner called the Ghost. Her captain is Wolf Larsen, a man of enormous strength, sharp intelligence and no mercy. Larsen will not set Humphrey ashore. Instead he makes him a member of the crew.

This is an adventure at sea, with storms, fights and cruelty on every deck. It is also a long argument between two ways of seeing the world. In the first key point, you will meet the fog, the collision and the strange ship that picks up a man who thought his life was safe.

A ferry sinks in the fog

The novel opens in the thick fog of San Francisco Bay. Humphrey Van Weyden is a passenger on a ferry called the Martinez, crossing the bay to return to San Francisco. He is a man of letters, a critic who writes essays and lives a comfortable, sheltered life. He thinks of himself as a gentleman, and he has never needed to prove himself in any physical way.

He has been staying at the home of his friend Charley Furuseth, a man of the same gentle kind. Humphrey tells us that the whole chain of events began with Furuseth, in a half joking way. That small detail sets the tone. The narrator is looking back on his own story with a mixture of wonder and humour, as a man who has been through something he could never have planned.

On the ferry, the fog hides everything. Humphrey chats with a fellow passenger and gets a first taste of how little he knows about the sea. Then another vessel strikes the Martinez out of the whiteness. There is panic, shouting and confusion among the passengers, and the ferry goes down quickly.

Humphrey ends up in the cold water with a life preserver and no one nearby. Hours pass in the fog, and he drifts, numb and frightened. For the first time in his life, his education, his manners and his reputation are worth nothing. Only his body and his will to live matter, and he is not sure he has much of either.

Just as he is losing hope, a ship appears out of the grey, and he hears voices and the creak of rigging. A small boat is lowered, and rough hands drag him aboard. He thinks he is saved. He has no idea that he has been taken from one danger to a far stranger one.

Questions about Il lupo di mare

What is The Sea-Wolf about?

It tells of Humphrey Van Weyden, a refined critic rescued from a sinking ferry by the sealing schooner Ghost, and his struggle to survive under its ruthless, brilliant captain Wolf Larsen.

Who is Wolf Larsen in The Sea-Wolf?

Wolf Larsen is the captain of the Ghost. He is physically enormous, self-educated and cruel, and he believes that life is only a struggle in which the strong devour the weak.

Is The Sea-Wolf based on a true story?

No, it is fiction, published in 1904. But Jack London drew on his own youth at sea, including time on a sealing schooner, and on the ideas of Darwin and Spencer.

What is the main message of The Sea-Wolf?

The novel sets brute strength against conscience and culture. It suggests that force alone leaves a person isolated, while ideals and human bonds, though fragile, give life its meaning.

Is The Sea-Wolf hard to read?

Not really. The plot moves fast and the language is direct. There are scenes of violence.
