A chi è rivolto

For readers who love character-centered drama, talk that hides feeling, and stories about what it costs to make art. Unreturned love, rival artistic dreams, and humor mixed with sorrow bring this circle of artists to life.

Che cos’è questo libro

The Sea-Gull is a play in four acts by Anton Chekhov, written in 1895 and first staged in St Petersburg in 1896. That opening night went badly, and Chekhov was badly shaken. Two years later the Moscow Art Theatre staged it again, and its quiet, careful acting showed audiences what the play could do. Since then it has been performed all over the world.

Very little happens in big, loud ways. A group of people gather at a lake on a country estate, drink tea, play cards and talk about what they want from life. Yet over one summer hearts are bruised and futures are decided. Almost everyone loves someone who loves someone else. You will meet a young writer hungry for new art, an actress who fears growing old, a famous author, and a girl who wants the stage more than anything. Let us begin with the evening when the young writer shows his work.

A play is staged beside the lake

The action takes place on the country estate of Sorin, an elderly retired official who is often ill and feels he has never really lived. His nephew Konstantin Treplev, a young writer in his twenties, has built a small stage in the garden, with the lake as its backdrop. He has written a play for the evening, and the audience will be his family and guests.

The star of the piece is Nina Zarechnaya, a neighbor's daughter, who has never acted before. She plays the soul of the whole world, speaking from a rock as the moon rises. Konstantin wants to break with the old theater of his day, which he thinks is full of tired tricks. He wants new forms, and he wants to be taken seriously.

The guests arrive in the afternoon. Among them are Konstantin's mother, the famous actress Irina Arkadina, and her companion, the successful writer Boris Trigorin. There is also Dr. Dorn, an easygoing local physician, and the estate manager Shamrayev with his wife Polina and their daughter Masha. Each person brings a private wish into the garden.

The mood before the play is already uneasy. Konstantin loves his mother but cannot bear how she treats him as a nobody beside her fame. He also loves Nina, and he needs both women to see what he can do. For him the performance is a test of his whole worth, and we feel how much rests on it.

The first act sets the pattern for the play. Tea, jokes and small talk cover large hopes, and the lake sits quietly behind all of it. Chekhov asks us to listen to what is not said as much as to what is.

He is also careful to show that the estate is a place of waiting. Time passes slowly, and the people there wait for love, for success, for a different life elsewhere.

Questions about Il gabbiano

What is The Sea-Gull about?

It is about a group of artists and their circle at a country estate, where unreturned love and rival ideas of art cause quiet pain. A young writer and a girl who wants to act stand at its center.

What does the sea-gull symbolize in the play?

The sea-gull stands for beauty and freedom, and for how easily they can be destroyed by careless people. It is linked to Nina, and to the writer Trigorin's idea for a story.

Why did Chekhov call The Sea-Gull a comedy?

Chekhov saw the characters as ordinary and often foolish, with life-sized troubles rather than grand fate. The play mixes humor with sorrow, and he wanted to avoid the heavy tone of tragedy.

When was The Sea-Gull written and first performed?

Chekhov wrote it in 1895, and it was first staged in St Petersburg in 1896, where it failed. The Moscow Art Theatre staged it in 1898 with great success.

Is The Sea-Gull hard to read?

Not in language, since the talk is simple and everyday. Much of the feeling lies in pauses and unspoken wishes.
