A Steamer Carries a Whole Society

The story opens on a December morning aboard the steamer Tabo, which labors up the Pasig toward La Laguna. Rizal paints it as a comic copy of the Ship of State. Friars, clerks and officials sit in comfort on the upper deck, while Indians, Chinese and mestizos are wedged among the cargo below.

Above sits the jeweler Simoun, thin and white haired, with huge blue goggles. He is said to guide the Captain-General. When talk turns to straightening the river, he proposes forced labor with no pay. Don Custodio, a councilor, answers with a plan to raise ducks that will eat the snails and clear the channel.

The comedy hides a real question about who pays for the schemes of the powerful. Each joke points to a wound, and the people on this boat will meet again in darker places.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
