Che cos’è questo libro

The Purple Land is a novel by W. H. Hudson, first published in 1885. Hudson was born on the pampas of Argentina and later settled in England, and he wrote this book from memory of the River Plate country. It tells the story of Richard Lamb, a young Englishman who ends up wandering through Uruguay, which was then called the Banda Oriental, in a time of civil strife. Lamb tells the story himself, in a frank and often humorous voice.

You get a travel tale with a love story at its start, a run of close escapes, and a long series of meetings with gauchos, landowners, soldiers and women who shelter or tempt him. You also get a picture of a place where hospitality counts for more than law, and where a stranger can be fed and sent on his way with a blessing. The book asks what a person gains by leaving a tidy, orderly society behind. Let us start with how Lamb comes to be on the road at all.

A runaway marriage sends Lamb abroad

The story begins with Richard Lamb, a young Englishman living in Buenos Aires. He falls in love with a girl named Paquita, and the two marry without her family's blessing. Her father is not a man who forgives a slight, and so the marriage lands Lamb in real danger.

Lamb must leave Buenos Aires, and he heads across the River Plate toward Montevideo and the country beyond it. He is young, rash and sure of himself, and he treats the whole affair as an adventure more than a disaster. He tells us as much in a cheerful voice, and that voice is one of the book's pleasures.

The tone is set at once. Lamb is no stern hero. He is a man who acts on impulse, makes mistakes, and then tells the story of them with a smile. Hudson uses this to let us see the new country through eyes that are eager and not always wise.

The opening also sets the larger frame. Lamb has crossed into a land that is not his own, where he knows few people and holds no power. Every meeting that follows depends on whether the strangers he meets choose to be kind, suspicious or dangerous. That uncertainty drives the story forward and gives each new house on the road its own small suspense.
