Che cos’è questo libro

Why would two people who care for each other act like enemies? In The Place of Honeymoons, Harold MacGrath answers with a stage door in Paris, a kidnapping, a rival diva and a lakeside villa full of suitors. Edward Courtlandt, a rich American wanderer, cannot forget Nora Harrigan, the famous opera singer known as Eleonora da Toscana. Something broke between them two years ago. Pride, jealousy and a cruel scheme keep them apart. The tone is light and quick, with real feeling beneath the comedy.

Punto chiave 1 di 9

A millionaire waits at the stage door

Courtlandt sits rigid in the Paris Opera while a soprano sings. Her voice calls up a golden temple in Rangoon. He is young but weathered, rich beyond use, and without a goal. He has climbed mountains and hunted tigers, yet nothing satisfies him.

After the performance he loiters at the stage door among the young men who wait for dancers. He sees the singer step into her limousine, pale and quick. A tall man in a soft Bavarian hat offers to help her, and Courtlandt pushes him aside.

Then Flora Desimone, a Calabrian diva, sweeps out in a grander car. Courtlandt watches her pass and longs to throttle her, as if she did him some old wrong. His memory of a Burmese temple, and of running away when he should have stayed, has drawn him back from the East.
