Che cos’è questo libro
The Perfect World is a science fiction adventure by Ella M. Scrymsour, written in the years after the Great War. It begins in a quiet Derbyshire village and ends very far from it. Along the way it takes in a coal mine, a hidden people beneath the ground, an inventor's airship and a journey no one could plan.
The story follows two cousins, Alan and Desmond Forsyth, who go to work in their uncle's colliery. A village legend, a strange fiery light and a run of disappearances turn their training into a fight for survival. The book mixes mystery, peril, romance and scenes of invention and discovery. It asks what a society would look like if it had truly shed cruelty, and what it might cost to get there.
In this summary you will meet the cursed village, the underground land of Kalvar, the terrible temple of fire and the guide who leads the cousins to a lost tomb. You will also see how the two men return to a world that has moved on without them. Let us begin where the trouble begins, in the village of Marshfielden.

A village that fears strangers
The story opens in Marshfielden, a village tucked among the Derbyshire peaks. It has one cobbled street, gardens full of marigolds and a tiny church. Mr. Winthrop, the vicar, has lived there for forty years and has never left. The men work at the Grimland coal mine two miles away, and an old custom makes them wash off the coal dust before they walk home, so the village always looks spotless.
The villagers also keep a legend. Long ago, when Henry the Eighth took the local priory, an outcast prior is said to have cursed the place. Whenever a stranger settles there, trouble, illness and death will follow. Mary Slater, a young mother, recites the rhyme to the vicar with real fear in her voice. He laughs and tells her that such tales go against the faith he preaches.
Then the new owner of the mine, Sir John Forsyth, sends his two nephews to learn the work from the bottom. Alan is twenty-five and will inherit a title. Desmond is a year younger. They have been friends since birth, for their mothers were twin sisters and both young men lost their parents early. Mrs. Slater agrees to take them as lodgers, and the street fills with watchers on the evening they arrive.
The cousins settle in happily. They work hard, eat well at Sweet William Cottage, and spend evenings with Mr. Winthrop, who studied at their own Cambridge college. They talk of Sir John's great hobby, an aluminum airship called the Argenta. It is finished and handsome, but no known power can lift it. He hopes a fuel called Petradtheolin will one day make it fly.
For three months nothing happens, and the villagers begin to relax. Only Moll Murlock, whose three-year-old son plays in the garden of the corner house, keeps her eyes on the strangers. The reader senses that the quiet cannot last, and the story is careful to make the village charming enough that its loss will matter.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
