A boy, a wooden man, and magic tobacco

Freddie is sent to buy a half pound of pipe tobacco for his father. He is told to hurry, and he forgets at once. Outside the shop he stares at a wooden figure called Mr. Punch, a hunchbacked little man holding out black wooden cigars.

A living shopkeeper steps out who looks much like the figure. He is Toby Littleback, and he has a hump of his own. Freddie clings to Toby's coat, and the man's body shakes, though his face stays solemn.

Inside, Freddie meets Toby's aunt Amanda, thin and sharp, with pins in her bodice and in her mouth. Toby points to a white jar on the shelf. It holds magic tobacco stolen by a sailor from a sorcerer, and Freddie must never smoke it. Of course the warning does what warnings do.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about La vecchia tabaccheria

What is The Old Tobacco Shop about?

A small boy named Freddie is sent to buy pipe tobacco and discovers a shop full of magic. He meets a hunchbacked shopkeeper, a sailor from China and pirates, and he follows a map to an island that promises to correct life's mistakes.

Who is Mr. Punch in The Old Tobacco Shop?

Mr. Punch is a wooden figure who stands by the shop door holding a packet of cigars. Toby says that his father lives behind the church clock and calls him up when the two hands meet.

It is a sharp-smelling perfume the Churchwarden carries in a small bottle. A few drops make wicked spirits, such as imps and pirates, freeze, fade and disappear, though it does no harm to ordinary people.

Is The Old Tobacco Shop easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that matters. The chapters are short, the story moves from scene to scene with lively talk, and each character has a voice that is easy to follow, so it reads well aloud.

What is Correction Island?

Correction Island is the place marked on a map given to Freddie. The writing on it promises that anyone who comes there will have his errors, troubles and losses corrected, from a crooked back to a lack of love.
