Che cos’è questo libro
The Mystery of the Missing Eyebrows is a boys' adventure novel by Stephen Rudd. It is the first of a series of twelve books about newspaper carriers, and the writer was himself once a carrier and later a circulation manager. The hero, Renfro Horn, is thirteen, the clever son of a rich family, and he reads detective stories far into the night. When he takes a newspaper route in Lindendale, he finds the mystery he has been waiting for.
The story gives you a cold winter town, a ramshackle house where lights move from room to room, and a dog that plays tug of war with a paper bag. It gives you a maid named Mary Dugan who trained as a detective by mail, and a contest in which every ten new customers win a Thanksgiving turkey. Newspaper business and crime plot run side by side. We begin with Renfro on a snowy walk, where a dropped rabbit and conflicting stories start the whole puzzle.

Strange lights at the old Hall house
Renfro Horn walks alone in the winter fields outside Lindendale. He startles old Captain Pete Hall, a hunter who drops his string of rabbits in the snow. Renfro notices three quail hidden in the pile, which the game warden has forbidden to hunters, and he politely pretends he saw nothing. Captain Pete says he has lived in a shack on his land since September because the big family house is too cold to heat.
That statement troubles Renfro, because he has seen lights flash from room to room in the big house. A boy named Clint Moore tells him that the old man is crazy and that people only see lights there now and then. On the streetcar, Clint adds an old story. Captain Pete once reported counterfeiters working in the shack, and he did not know that one of them was his own brother.
The brother swore revenge, but Clint does not know how long his sentence was. At home, Renfro finds his parents discussing him. His tall, thin father thinks his habit of walking alone is odd. His mother blames the detective stories he reads at three in the morning and wants to move his room.
Then Mrs. Horn mentions that she drove out for rabbits at about five that afternoon and Captain Pete shut the door in her face. But Renfro had met the old man in the woods at nearly that hour. Either Renfro has the time wrong, or someone else is living in the big house.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.

What is The Mystery of the Missing Eyebrows about?
It follows Renfro Horn, a rich boy who becomes a newspaper carrier, as he investigates strange lights at an old house and the kidnapping of a judge's daughter. His key clue is a pair of eyebrows frozen to a window.
Who is Mary Dugan in the story?
Mary is the Horn family's cook and maid. She took a mail-order detective course, chatters about romantic novels, sings alto in her church choir, and becomes Renfro's brave and funny partner in the investigation.
What does Old Grief mean in the book?
Old Grief is the nickname for the poorest, hardest-paying newspaper route in Lindendale, which Renfro is given. It runs through pawnshops, small cottages and the road past the haunted-looking Hall house.
Is The Mystery of the Missing Eyebrows easy to read?
Yes, in a good sense: chapters are short, the language is plain, the humor is warm, and many chapters end on a cliffhanger, so the mystery keeps moving from page to page.
What is the main message of the book?
The book stresses responsibility, honest work and careful observation. Renfro succeeds because he keeps his promises on the route while he follows small clues that adults overlook.
