Che cos’è questo libro
The Marquise's Crime is a short Gothic tale by E. T. A. Hoffmann, who died in 1822. It is built around a murder trial in France in the late 1600s, and it asks how far anyone can trust what seems proved.
It opens in a Paris salon, where Count de Saint-Hermine shocks the company with terrible news. A marquis he respects has been killed in his bed, and the killer, he says, is the marquise herself. How did a gifted, sensible woman, once the pride of Paris society, come to stand accused? The story goes back to her childhood to find out, and the first answer lies with her father.

A father's cold lessons shape Franziska
Franziska Chauvelin loses her mother in early childhood and is raised by her father, a stern chevalier who despises love. He keeps every womanly influence away from her, even playmates and governesses, and he mocks the servants he hires as silly creatures. He wants a daughter who sees feeling as weakness.
He fails in part. Franziska grows up clear-minded, graceful and playful, and Paris society adores her. Yet whenever a man draws her heart, her father's picture of a ridiculous woman in love rises before her eyes, and fear kills the feeling. She is still unmarried at twenty-five, when her father dies and leaves her the Nerbonne estate.
The Duchess d'Aiguillon, who loves moral talk, decides that Franziska must marry. Pressed to confess, Franziska tells her one secret. At sixteen, in the duchess's own salon, a young man's dark eyes struck her with a force she has hated ever since. Weeks later he came to her house, and she fainted. She says she won both battles, and she thanks her father's sarcasm for the second victory.
That’s 1 of 4 key points.
