A chi è rivolto

For readers who love the life of the Buddha told as a story, and who enjoy stately Victorian verse read aloud.

Che cos’è questo libro

It tells the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the prince who became the Buddha, in eight books. Arnold had lived in India as a schoolmaster and admired what he read of Buddhist tradition. He wrote the poem to bring that story and its teaching to English readers in a form they could enjoy.

The poem gives you the birth of the prince, his sheltered youth, the shock of meeting age, sickness and death, and his flight from the palace. It follows his years of searching and the struggle under the fig tree. Then it sets out the teaching in the Buddha's own voice. The poem was read widely in Britain and America, and for many readers it was a first meeting with Buddhism. Let us begin with the prince's birth and the dreams around it.

A prince is born amid signs

The poem opens in the kingdom of the Sakyas, in northern India, in the city of Kapilavastu. King Suddhodana rules there, and his queen is Maya. Before the birth, the queen has a dream in which a white elephant enters her side. The court takes this as a sign that the child will be no ordinary one.

Arnold paints the birth in the soft colors of a legend. Nature seems to rejoice, and the gods are said to watch. A holy man, the sage Asita, comes to see the baby. He tells the king that the boy will either rule the whole world or give up the world and save it.

The king hopes for worldly greatness but knows the boy may choose the other path. He wants an heir and a great ruler, and he fears the second path. So the father makes a decision that shapes everything after it. He will fill the boy's life with beauty and ease so that he never wants to leave.

This opening sets the tone of the whole poem. The language is rich and the scenes are full of flowers, light and ceremony. Yet the first book already carries a question. What happens to a child who is shielded from all pain, and can such a shield last?

Who wrote The Light of Asia and when?

Sir Edwin Arnold, an English poet and journalist, wrote it. It was first published in 1879, after his years in India, and it was widely read in Britain and America.

Not strictly. Arnold drew on the legends and texts available to him and shaped them for Victorian readers. Scholars say it differs from early sources in places, but it shows how the Buddha's story was received in the West.

That suffering comes from craving and ignorance, and that compassion and a disciplined life can lead beyond it. Each person must work for release through their own actions, not through gods or rituals.
