A chi è rivolto

For readers who love Victorian sensation fiction, courtroom puzzles and strong heroines who refuse to sit still. It will also reward anyone curious about how law and marriage worked in the 1870s.

Che cos’è questo libro

The Law and the Lady is a novel by Wilkie Collins, first published in 1875. Collins was already known for The Woman in White and The Moonstone, and here he builds a mystery around a marriage. The detective is not a policeman or a lawyer. She is a young wife named Valeria Brinton, who sets out to learn what her husband will not tell her.

The book gives you a courtship, a shock, a long search and a cast of odd and memorable people. It also gives you a look at Scottish law, where a jury may return a verdict called Not Proven. That verdict clears no one, and it drives the whole story. Let us begin where Valeria begins, with a wedding and a name.

A bride finds her husband has a secret

Valeria Brinton is a young Englishwoman who falls in love with Eustace Woodville. Some of her friends and relations doubt the match, and Eustace himself seems oddly guarded about his past. Valeria is strong willed, and she marries him anyway, trusting that love will answer every question.

The marriage begins happily, but small signs of trouble appear almost at once. Valeria notices that the name her husband uses is not the one he was born with. Collins uses this small oddity to set the story in motion, much as he does elsewhere with a stray detail that nobody can explain.

Soon Valeria learns that Eustace once bore the name Macallan. She learns too that the change of name hides a painful episode in Scotland. For a bride on her honeymoon, the discovery is a cold shock, because it means that the man she married has kept something large from her.

The opening shows what the book cares about. Marriage in this story is a promise of trust, and Valeria finds the promise has been broken before she has had time to enjoy it. Everything that follows grows from her answer to that betrayal.

Questions about La legge e la signora

What is The Law and the Lady about?

It tells of Valeria Brinton, who discovers soon after her wedding that her husband was tried in Scotland for his first wife's death. The jury returned a Not Proven verdict, and Valeria sets out to find the truth.

What does Not Proven mean in The Law and the Lady?

Not Proven is a verdict once available in Scottish courts. It means the jury was not convinced of guilt, but it does not declare the accused innocent. The accused goes free, but doubt remains.

Who is Misserimus Dexter?

He is Eustace's invalid friend, a clever and eccentric man whose odd manner and strange household make him one of the most memorable figures in the novel. Valeria must deal with him in her search.

When was The Law and the Lady written?

Wilkie Collins published it in 1875. It is a work of fiction, not a true story, although it draws on real features of Victorian law, especially the Scottish Not Proven verdict.

Is The Law and the Lady a detective novel?

Yes, in large part. Valeria acts as an amateur detective, gathering evidence and questioning witnesses. Many readers see her as an early woman detective in English fiction, though the book also deals with marriage and trust.
