A chi è rivolto

For readers who enjoy Doyle beyond Sherlock Holmes, Edwardian and 1920s settings, and stories about the spiritualist movement. Séances, quarrels in drawing rooms, and debates over evidence, grief and belief offer an adventure of ideas.

Che cos’è questo libro

The Land of Mist is a novel by Arthur Conan Doyle, published in 1926 and first printed in magazine form. It brings back Professor Challenger, the roaring, bearded scientist of The Lost World. This time he faces no dinosaurs on a plateau. He faces a question that mattered deeply to Doyle in his later years: can the living speak with the dead?

Doyle wrote it as a believer. By the 1920s he had spent years lecturing and writing on spiritualism, and he wanted a story that would carry his case to readers who would never open a serious tract. So the book is part adventure of ideas, part comedy of a stubborn man, and part argument. You get séances, mediums, doubters, quarrels in drawing rooms and a family caught in the middle. You also get the old pleasure of watching Challenger shout. The first thing to meet is the man himself, as he stands in the book, older and alone.

Challenger returns older, louder, and alone

The story opens in the England of the 1920s, and Professor George Edward Challenger is no longer the man who led an expedition into unknown country. He has lost his wife, the small and patient woman who once softened his temper. Those who know the earlier books will feel her absence at once. The house is quieter, and the great man is a little more shut in with his own opinions.

Challenger is still a scientist to his bones. He believes in what can be measured, weighed and repeated in a laboratory. He holds the public in some contempt, and he holds fashionable beliefs in more. When people speak of messages from the dead, he does not argue gently. He thunders.

Doyle uses this loud figure as a test. If a man as hard as Challenger can be made to look again, the reader may be willing to look too. But Doyle does not make it easy for him, and he does not make it quick. The book lets Challenger keep his dignity, his rage and his wit for a long time.

Beside him stands his daughter Enid, a grown woman with a mind of her own. She is not her father's pupil in every matter. Through her, the story begins to open a door that her father would like to keep locked.
