A chi è rivolto

For readers who love political history, are curious about the roots of Zionism and the state of Israel, and enjoy seeing how a movement began on paper.

Che cos’è questo libro

The Jewish State is a pamphlet of about eighty pages, written by Theodor Herzl and published in Vienna in February 1896. Herzl was a Jewish journalist and playwright who worked as a Paris correspondent for a leading Viennese newspaper. He wrote it in a few intense months, after years of watching hostility toward Jews grow in Europe, including the public anger around the Dreyfus case in France. The German title is Der Judenstaat, and the English version came out the same year.

The book makes one bold claim. Herzl says the Jewish question is neither a religious problem nor a social one. It is a national question, and it can be solved only if Jews gain a land of their own, recognised by the powers of the world. The pamphlet does more than argue. It sketches a working plan, with an organisation, a company, a choice of territory, a system of labour and a form of government. You get a political argument and a practical proposal in one short text. The first key point is how Herzl diagnoses the problem.

The Jewish question is a national question

Herzl opens by saying that his idea is an old one. It is the restoration of a Jewish state. He then insists that the troubles of the Jews are not a matter of faith. In his view, nobody persecutes Jews today for their theology. They are treated as a distinct people, and others see them that way whether the Jews wish it or not.

He also rejects the idea that the problem is merely social or economic. Governments and reformers had tried to treat it as a question of manners, law or trade. Herzl argues that these fixes miss the point. The question exists wherever Jews live in noticeable numbers, and it follows them where they go.

From this he draws a political conclusion. If the problem is national, the answer must be international. It cannot be settled quietly in one village or one country. It has to be taken up by the great powers and settled in council, as other political questions are.

Herzl wants readers to see the question clearly before they feel anything about it. He writes in a calm, almost businesslike tone. He claims he is not offering a dream but an analysis, and he asks Jews and non-Jews alike to judge his reasoning on its merits. For a modern reader, this opening shows how he framed the whole movement. He treats Jews as a people with a political future, not only a faith community, and that framing shapes every later chapter.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Lo Stato ebraico
