You will love this book if you enjoy a story that starts as village comedy and grows into a chase, or if you like science fiction built on one bold idea.
Che cos’è questo libro
Picture a snowy February day in a Sussex village. A stranger staggers into the Coach and Horses inn, wrapped from head to toe, with only the shiny tip of his nose showing beneath his hat. He asks for a fire and a room, and he wants to be left alone. What could lie under all those wrappings?
The Invisible Man was written by H. G. Wells in the late 1890s, one of his scientific romances that take one impossible idea and follow it through with cold logic. Here the idea is a man who makes himself invisible. You get village comedy, then fear, a wild chase, and a confession from the man himself about how he did it and why.

A muffled stranger takes over the inn
The story opens on a wintry day in Iping, a quiet village in Sussex. A stranger crosses the downs on foot with a little black suitcase. He is covered from head to toe, and only the tip of his nose shows under his hat. He demands a fire and a room at the Coach and Horses.
Mrs. Hall, the landlady, sees good money in a dead season. But he will not take off his hat or coat. When she brings his meal, she finds a white napkin over his mouth, a bandage across his forehead and thick blue glasses. He tells her he is an experimental investigator and needs solitude because an accident has left his eyes weak.
The clock mender, Teddy Henfrey, feels the stranger staring at him through the blue glasses until his nerves give way. He walks off muttering that the man looks like someone hiding from the police. Every detail is a clue, but the villagers can only guess.
A stranger who hides everything draws every eye to himself.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

About 3 h 20 min to read.Questions about The Invisible Man: A Grotesque Romance
What is The Invisible Man about?
It follows Griffin, a scientist who makes himself invisible, from a snowy arrival at a Sussex inn to a hunt around Port Burdock. The book mixes village comedy, a chase and a long account of how the experiment was done and what it cost.
Who is the Invisible Man in the novel?
He is Griffin, a young physicist once at University College who studied light and bodies. He is almost an albino, which helped his experiment, and he arrives in Iping wrapped in bandages so that people will not see that he has no face.
Is The Invisible Man based on a true story?
No, it is a work of fiction by H. G. Wells, written in the late 1890s. He built it on real ideas about light, refraction and transparent tissue, which makes the impossible invention feel believable.
Is The Invisible Man easy to read?
Wells writes in a clear, lively style with short scenes, quick dialogue and plenty of humor. The story moves fast, and Griffin's explanation of the science is laid out step by step with everyday examples.
What is the main message of The Invisible Man?
Wells shows that power cut off from other people becomes a trap. Griffin's discovery brings him no joy because he has no care for anyone else, and the book asks what knowledge is worth without conscience.
