A chi è rivolto
For readers who love novels of ideas, domestic dramas with a political edge, and the history of India under British rule.
Che cos’è questo libro
The Home and the World is a novel by the Bengali writer Rabindranath Tagore. He first published it in Bengali in 1916 under the title Ghare Baire, which means at home and outside. It came out in the years when the memory of the 1905 partition of Bengal still burned, and when the swadeshi movement urged Indians to boycott British goods and make their own. Tagore had supported that movement at first. He then turned away from its anger, and this book is his answer.
The story is small in scale. A wealthy landowner named Nikhil lives on his estate in Bengal with his wife Bimala. He loves her and wants her to be free, so he persuades her to leave the women's quarters and meet the world. The world arrives in the form of Sandip, his old friend and a magnetic leader of the nationalist cause. Three people then speak in turn, each telling the same weeks in a different voice. You hear Bimala, Nikhil and Sandip, and each is sure of being right.
This summary gives you the shape of that triangle, the politics behind it and the questions Tagore raises about love, duty and the price of a cause. You will meet the people, see how the quarrel grows and learn how the book is built. Let us begin with the house where it all starts, and with the marriage at its centre.

A marriage begins inside quiet walls
The novel opens with Bimala looking back. She is the wife of Nikhil, a zamindar, which means a landlord who holds an old family estate and collects rent from its tenants. She was married young and has lived most of her life inside the inner apartments of his house. Her world is the household, its rituals and its servants. She is devoted to her husband in the way she was taught a wife should be.
Nikhil is not an ordinary landlord. He is gentle, educated and given to thinking. He does not boast, and he does not enjoy using the power his name gives him. Other people read this softness as weakness. His own relatives find him strange, because he does not live as a man of his rank is expected to live.
The house holds other lives too. Nikhil's elder brother's widow, whom the family calls the Bara Rani, the senior queen, lives there with her own jealousies. She watches Bimala with a sharp eye and enjoys any sign of trouble. Her presence reminds us that the home is crowded with old rivalries, not only with love.
Bimala tells us she once believed her marriage was complete. She had a husband who was kind and a place that was safe. She says it plainly and with some pride. Tagore wants us to see this contentment clearly, because everything that follows tests it.
Nikhil, however, feels a lack. He senses that Bimala has never chosen him, because she has never had any choice to make. Her love was handed to her by custom. He wonders whether a love that has never met an alternative is love at all. That doubt, born of his generosity, sets the whole story moving.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
