For readers who love a life story with a cause behind it, and anyone curious about the Philippines under Spain, peaceful reform, and the courage of a physician, novelist and poet.
Che cos’è questo libro
This is a biography of José Rizal, the physician, novelist and poet who became the national hero of the Philippines. It was written in the early 1920s by Charles Edward Russell, an American journalist and author who later won a Pulitzer Prize for biography, together with Eulogio Balan Rodriguez, a Filipino collaborator. It appeared when Americans governed the islands and when many English readers knew little about the man Filipinos honored above all others.
The book follows Rizal from a prosperous family in a small town to a firing squad in Manila at the age of thirty-five. Along the way you meet a gifted boy, a student in Madrid, a writer in Berlin and Paris, a country doctor in exile, and a prisoner facing a military court. You also see the Spanish colonial world that shaped him. Let us begin where his story begins, in the town of Calamba, with a family, a house and a childhood that already pointed toward trouble.

A gifted boy grows up in Calamba
José Rizal was born on 19 June 1861 in Calamba, a town in Laguna province, south of Manila. His father, Francisco Mercado, was a tenant farmer of some means. José was one of eleven children, and the family lived in a comfortable house with books in it.
The biographers stress how early the boy showed his talents. He learned to read at his mother's knee, wrote verse as a child, and drew and carved with ease. His mother taught him lessons in reading and in prayer.
The book also shows what the family lived under. Spain had ruled the islands for more than three hundred years, and religious orders held large estates and great influence. A family could be respected and still be at the mercy of a friar, a governor or a police officer.
A hard lesson came when Rizal's mother was arrested on a charge widely seen as unjust and was marched a long way to prison. The authors present this as one of the early wounds that shaped his view of Spanish rule. It showed him that law in the islands often served the powerful, and it stayed with him all his life.
