Che cos’è questo libro

The Four Feathers is an adventure novel by A. E. W. Mason, first published in 1902. It follows Harry Feversham, the son of a long line of soldiers, who resigns his commission on the eve of a campaign in Egypt. Three fellow officers send him white feathers, the sign of a coward, and his fiancee adds a fourth.

Mason sets the tale against the real wars of the Sudan in the 1880s, among the Red Sea ports, the Nile and the desert, and the Mahdi's capital. He gives you a story of shame, a long private mission, and a love triangle in which each person tries to spare the others. Along the way he asks what courage really is, and whether a man who fears the idea of danger can still meet danger itself.

You will meet a stern general, a gentle old sailor, a blind soldier who sees more than he ever did, and a woman of Donegal who holds her ground. The book moves from an English country house to London, to the Irish hills and then to the burning desert. Let us begin on a June night in Surrey, where a boy of fourteen sits up late and listens to soldiers tell their stories.

A boy hears stories of cowardice

The story opens at Broad Place, the Surrey home of General Feversham. Each June the general holds a Crimean dinner for old comrades, and this year it falls on the birthday of his son Harry, who turns fourteen. Lieutenant Sutch, a lame naval veteran who once knew Harry's mother, arrives early and watches the boy closely.

The old soldiers tell tales of war in short, matter-of-fact phrases. Harry listens as though every event were happening in the room. He shivers at the cold of the trenches and strains with the suspense of waiting before a battle. Sutch sees on his face a look he has seen on frightened recruits, and it troubles him.

The general tells of Lord Wilmington, a nobleman who refused to carry a message under fire and was shunned until he killed himself. A retired surgeon then tells of a doctor in India who cut his own artery in panic at the sound of a bullet. Everyone else shifts in discomfort, but Harry sits rigid and white, like an animal in a trap.

The general declares that Harry could never understand such men, because he is a Feversham. Sutch thinks this is blind, for the boy has his mother's dark eyes and her imagination. Later he finds Harry alone in the hall, holding a candle up to the portraits of the soldier ancestors. Harry bows to them like a man accepting a sentence, and he refuses Sutch's offer of help. Upstairs, he lies awake and sees the faces of the two ruined men turn into his own.

Is The Four Feathers based on a true story?

The characters are invented, but the setting is real. The story moves among the wars in Egypt and the Sudan in the 1880s, including the siege of Khartum and the Mahdi's rule. Mason published it in 1902.
