Punto chiave 1 di 10

A fugitive steps off the train into fog

The story opens at half past three on a cold March morning in Albany. A night train drops a few passengers into a fog so thick that the station lamps look like pale stars. One of them is a man in a long black coat and a low derby, carrying a scarred English kitbag.

He believes the fog has finally hidden him. But a short, thickset shadow slips down the platform behind him.

He signs the hotel register as John Hawksley of London. In his room he opens a brown tobacco pouch. Inside, wrapped in cotton wool, lie jewels of every color, and two emeralds the size of half dollars.

The squat man has taken the next room. Hawksley sets chairs against the door and the window and lies down in the dark. Then he hears a chair fall and turns on the light. A chase begins when a man thinks he has finally escaped.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
