A chi è rivolto

For readers who love political drama, history with real moral stakes, and the plays of Shakespeare or the Greek tragedians, with loyalty, love and friendship caught between ambition and fate.

Che cos’è questo libro

The Death of Wallenstein is a play in five acts by the German poet and dramatist Friedrich Schiller. It was written in 1799 and is the last part of a trilogy about Albrecht von Wallenstein, the great general of the Holy Roman Emperor in the Thirty Years' War. The first part, Wallenstein's Camp, shows the soldiers. The second, The Piccolomini, shows the plot taking shape. This third play carries the story to its crisis.

Schiller was a historian before he was a playwright, and he took his subject from real events. Wallenstein commands a huge army and holds more power than any subject should. The Emperor in Vienna begins to fear him, and Wallenstein begins to ask whether he can trust the Emperor. In this summary you meet a man who stands between loyalty and rebellion and cannot decide. You also meet the people who push him, the friends who doubt him, and one friend who betrays him. Let us start with the world Wallenstein rules.

A general too strong to trust

The play opens in the sixteenth year of the Thirty Years' War, a long struggle over religion and power across Europe. Wallenstein has raised an enormous army, and his soldiers are loyal to him more than to the Emperor. He has won great victories, and he has been dismissed once before at Regensburg. Now he is back in command, and the court is afraid again.

The army is gathered around the town of Pilsen in Bohemia. Wallenstein believes the war should end in a peace that holds the German lands together. Vienna wants something different, and it wants to keep him under its thumb. So he has begun secret talks with Sweden, the very enemy he is supposed to be fighting.

Schiller does not make this a simple case of a traitor and a loyal state. Wallenstein has real grievances and real ideas, and he has been used and discarded before. The Emperor's advisers, for their part, have real reasons for fear. The audience is asked to weigh both sides and to feel that each of them has some right.

The central question is therefore not whether Wallenstein is powerful. It is whether he can make himself act on that power. His whole career has been built on bold decisions, yet in this play he delays and looks for signs. That delay is where the tragedy begins.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.

It is about the last days of the imperial general Wallenstein during the Thirty Years' War. He is torn between loyalty to the Emperor and a secret deal with Sweden, while allies and enemies close in around him.

Is The Death of Wallenstein a true story?

It is based on real history. Schiller invented some characters and scenes, such as Max and Thekla, for drama.

Do I need to read the other Wallenstein plays first?

It helps but is not required. The trilogy begins with Wallenstein's Camp and The Piccolomini. The Death of Wallenstein is the third play and is written to stand on its own, with the situation clear from the start.

Who are Max and Octavio Piccolomini?

Octavio is an older officer who secretly works for the Emperor against Wallenstein. Max is his son, a young officer who admires Wallenstein and loves his daughter Thekla. Their conflict is the emotional centre of the play.

What is the main message of The Death of Wallenstein?

The play asks how far people are ruled by fate and how far by their own choices. It also shows how politics and ambition can crush loyalty, love and friendship, even in a person of great ability.
