A chi è rivolto

For readers who enjoy English country life, family drama, and quiet irony in the manner of the Victorian novel. It suits anyone curious about squires, rectors, racing, and the law of marriage in the 1890s.

Che cos’è questo libro

The Country House is a novel by John Galsworthy, set in the English countryside in the early 1890s. It looks closely at a landed family, the Pendyces of Worsted Skeynes, and at the settled world of squire, rector, solicitor and neighbours that surrounds them. Galsworthy wrote it in the years before 1907 as a gentle, ironic portrait of the landowning class and the habits that hold it together.

The story begins with a shooting party and a dance, and it soon narrows to one painful matter. George Pendyce, the heir, is in love with Helen Bellew, a woman separated from her husband. Gossip spreads, the law of divorce draws in the whole family, and each person reacts after his or her own nature. You meet a squire who loves his estate more than his own feelings, a rector sure of his duty, an idealist who sees the world as he wishes it were, and a mother who has never asked for anything.

This summary walks you through the book in order and stops before its close. First, step into the world of Worsted Skeynes on the night the guests arrive.

A shooting party gathers at Worsted Skeynes

The story opens in October 1891 at the little railway station near Worsted Skeynes. Servants in livery wait for the guests of Horace Pendyce, and they gossip over a list of room assignments. Among the arrivals is Mrs. Jaspar Bellew, who steps into the brougham beside George Pendyce, the squire's eldest son. The coachman admits to a puzzled guest that she and her husband are no longer together.

At dinner the narrator draws the squire with great care. Horace Pendyce calls himself a Tory Communist, hates what he calls individualism, and loses money running his estate on model lines. He keeps a spaniel named John, collects rare birds and their eggs, and likes to talk about himself. His wife Margery, born a Totteridge, sits at the other end of the table with her raised eyebrows and gentle, expectant look.

The guests are each given a quick portrait. There is the stiff Mrs. Winlow, the forceful Lady Malden, the retired General Pendyce who is Horace's brother, and the rector Hussell Barter with his loud voice and firm opinions. Lady Malden and others whisper about Mrs. Bellew, calling her dangerous and short of money. George watches her across the table with a longing he cannot hide.

The chapter shows a world where everyone knows everyone's business and nobody says it aloud. It also plants the first note of unease, as a current seems to pass between George, Mrs. Bellew and his mother.

The next morning the men go out to shoot. Foxleigh, the best shot, wins the squire's approval without a mark against him, while others are noted in the squire's mental notebook. In the evening, George overhears men gossip in the smoking room about Mrs. Bellew's reckless nature, and he decides that nothing will stop him.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about The Country House

What is The Country House by John Galsworthy about?

It is about the Pendyce family of Worsted Skeynes, an English country estate, and what happens when the heir George falls in love with a married woman and her husband begins a divorce suit that threatens the family name.

Who is Mr. Pendyce and what does Pendycitis mean?

Horace Pendyce is the squire of Worsted Skeynes. The solicitor Paramor jokingly uses the word Pendycitis for a narrow, stubborn instinct that turns problems into needless suffering and makes people cling to habit and precedent.

When is The Country House set and when was it written?

The story is set in 1891 and 1892 in the English countryside and in London, and it was published in 1907. It is fiction, though its details of divorce law, clubs and country life reflect real customs of the time.

Is The Country House easy to read?

The story moves through clear scenes of dinners, a race, a fire and a church service, with lively dialogue and a small, memorable cast. Short chapters, a gentle humour and a loyal spaniel make it easy to follow.

What is the main message of The Country House?

Galsworthy shows how inherited habits, class pride and a rigid sense of duty can shape lives and cause pain, while gentleness, kindness and quiet courage, often from the least expected people, can soften them.
