A life of loss feeds the poetry

The collection opens with a memoir that ties the poems to the man. Edgar Poe was born in Boston in 1809, and his actor parents were gone before he was three. John Allan, a Scottish merchant in Richmond, Virginia, took the boy in and gave him his surname, though he later left him nothing in his will.

Poe shone at school and at the University of Virginia, swimming, leaping and winning honors in languages, but gambling debts ended the peace with Allan. In 1836 he married his cousin Virginia Clemm, whose repeated illness and death in 1846 darkened his last years.

He died in Baltimore in October 1849, at the age of forty. The orphan, the outsider and the mourner appear again and again, and so does Mrs. Clemm, Virginia's mother, to whom he wrote a tender sonnet.

Questions about L'opera poetica completa di Edgar Allan Poe

What is The Raven about?

A grieving scholar is visited at midnight by a black bird that answers every question with the word Nevermore. As he asks about his lost Lenore, the bird's reply deepens his sorrow and turns the bird into a symbol of endless remembrance.

What is in The Complete Poetical Works of Edgar Allan Poe?

It gathers his later poems, poems of manhood, scenes from the play Politian, poems of youth, doubtful poems, six prose poems and three essays, with a memoir of his life at the start.

Who are Lenore, Annabel Lee and Helen?

They are idealized, lost or distant women in his verse. Annabel Lee is a childhood love who dies, Lenore is a mourned maiden, and Helen is a figure of beauty linked to women Poe admired.

Is Annabel Lee a true story?

It was written early in 1849 and is widely read as an expression of Poe's lasting love for his wife Virginia, who died in 1846.

What does Poe say about writing poetry?

In The Poetic Principle and The Philosophy of Composition, he argues that poems should be short, aim at beauty and a sad tone, and rely on rhythm, refrains and a carefully planned effect.
