A likable boy and a worried family

At Nouaillé, near Poitiers, the widow Madame d'Oudart lives with her father, Monsieur Lhommeau, and her son Alex. Her husband, a commandant, died in the first fight of the Tunisian expedition. The house is modest, with two dovecotes and a sundial. The family could be happy there if they did not argue every day about Alex's future.

Alex has no special gift, but everyone finds him likable. The old notary suggests a place in his office. Madame d'Oudart refuses. Her pride demands diplomas earned in Paris, even though parting from her son will break her heart.

She has a rival in her old convent friend Madame Chef-Boutonne, whose son Paul is the same age as Alex. Her constant fear is that Alex will fall behind Paul in the race for degrees.

Who are the Chef-Boutonnes and the Lepoirouxes in the book?

Yes, in the sense that the chapters are short and lively, with many comic scenes, quick dialogue and sharply drawn characters. Each chapter works almost like a small story, and the narrator guides you gently.

What is the main message of the novel?

The novel shows how ambition and pride shape families, friendships and money, and how people mistake display for success. It suggests that charm, luck and simple affection matter more than rank and diplomas.
