Friends dream up a moon for sailors

The title story begins in a college dining hall. A group of students, led by one called Q, puzzle over the problem of longitude. Finding latitude is easy, since the height of the North Star tells you. Longitude is harder, and ships are lost on lee shores because captains do not know where they are.

Q proposes a ring above the earth, then a giant peashooter, then something better. A huge round object circling over one meridian would let anyone read their position from the sky. It must be solid enough to survive the fire of the air, so it must be brick. The friends settle on two hundred feet across and hollow inside, and they plan two flywheels to fling it upward.

The cost stops them cold. The bricks alone come to sixty thousand dollars, and they are young men with unpaid college bills. So the Brick Moon waits for seventeen years as a dream, until old friends return with money and nerve.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Yes, it appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in 1870 and 1871, and it describes a man-made moon in orbit long before space flight.
